Lung Surgery Techniques

Lung surgery of any kind, no matter the reason for the surgical procedure, is a major surgery that is takes a long time for the patient to recover from. But there are new techniques to be tried all the time that are designed to make this a much lesser ordeal for the patient. One such technique is called VATS, video assisted lung and chest surgery, that it is becoming a more common procedure. Studies show that an estimated million chest surgeries are done yearly.

If it is lung surgery that must be done VATS will be a much less invasive procedure than he usual surgery that is done by making an incision on the side of the chest, separating the ribs and doing whatever type of lung surgery that is required. Sometimes it is to repair a collapsed lung but others times it is to remove the lung or part of it because of lung cancer. With VATS the surgery is done when a thin tube is inserted between the ribs. Then an endoscope, which is a miniscule telescope connected to a video camera, in then inserted. This allows the surgeon to see inside, watching everything on a monitor as they proceed, without having to open the patient up as before.

Normally during this procedure the surgeon needs to make up to four incisions, all of them very tiny. The long-term affect of this seems to be less pain for the patient as well as a shorter recovery time. There is a shorter hospital stay as well, three days versus seven for the other procedure, and patients are able to get back to their normal activities faster after this kind of lung surgery.

VATS is used most for lung surgery that would be done for collapsed lungs or for removing blisters on the lungs that are not cancer related but that can cause the lungs to collapse. Your physician will decide which type of procedure will be best for you based on the reason for the surgery.
