Different Types of Breast Surgery

Many of us look for ways to look our best. For many women, the procedure of breast surgery may be a way to accomplish this goal. Here is some information about the different types of surgery and when surgery may be appropriate.

When it comes to cosmetic reasons for surgery, the most common is augmentation. Surgical techniques have greatly improved over the last three decades, which has made the procedure easier and the recovery time shorter. This type of breast surgery involves opening the breast area and inserting one of several types of augmentation forms. The areola and nipple may also be relocated in order to provide a natural look to the breast.

Breast surgery to reduce the size of the breast has also become more common. This surgery may be done for cosmetic reasons, but more often the reduction procedure is performed as a way to relieve back pain and stress on the spine. The reduction involves removing some of the breast tissue while still keeping the natural contours of the breast in place. As with any type of breast surgery, the nipples and areola may need to be relocated higher on the reduced breast.

Breast lifts are performed by following along the natural lines of the breast and making small incisions. The areola will also be traced out with an incision. The skin on the lower part of the breast is removed; then the breast tissue, nipple, and areola are moved up to a higher position. Sutures are used to close the incisions once the nipple and areola are realigned and the surgeon is happy with the contours of the breast.

Mammoplasty is a breast surgery procedure that may be performed in order to replace breast tissue that has been removed as a result of cancer or an accident. Depending on how much reparative work must be done, the surgeon may use tissue from other parts of the body to reconstruct the damaged area of the breast. In other cases, augmentation devices may be used.

Breast surgery is not something to be entered into lightly. Before moving forward with any procedure, it is a good idea to talk frankly with your physician and make sure you have reasonable expectations of the outcome, as well as the risks involved.
